Food Safety with Wooden Chopping Boards

You may have heard about health concerns surrounding some types of chopping boards. Cross contamination is the main issue that experts are concerned about. Let us explain why Food Safety with Wooden Chopping Boards is the best solution when choosing a new cutting board.

What is Cross Contamination?

Cross contamination is the passing of bacteria from contaminated food to uncontaminated food. Cross contamination can occur when storing or handling food.

For example, using the same chopping board to cut up raw chicken, then straight after, fresh fruit, can lead to cross-contamination which has the potential to make you very ill.

What is the answer for Food Safety?

So how do you stop this? In our opinion, our Australian Cutting Boards are the answer. Our camphor laurel cutting boards are made from Australian kiln dried timber.

Australian Camphor Laurel Boards are the safest surfaces for the preparation of food, due to the anti-fungal and anti-bacterial properties in the timber.

A list of the compounds in the timber is also found in herbs and spices which have been used as preservatives for centuries.

Also, another point in our favour, is our boards are made from one solid piece of timber, no glue and no laminating. In other words, no cracks or joins for harmful bacteria to form.

How to care for your chopping board to keep food preparation safe.

Our wooden chopping boards are easy to maintain!

Simply thoroughly wash the chopping board in the sink with hot water and detergent. Rinse and then stand the board upright in a drying rack until it is completely dry.

Oiling your board every couple of months, has many benefits as well. Repeated washing in the detergent can dry your board out. The oil will keep the timber supple. We recommend Grape-seed oil as it is a food-grade oil, and can be easily obtained from your local supermarket. It has no smell and no taste.

Your board will also dry much quicker either by hanging or safe to sit in the draining rack. As a barrier of oil, will not let water penetrate and soak the whole board.

Other benefits of wooden chopping boards

Food will not stain or stick to your board. Food items like garlic, onion, turmeric, mushrooms, etc will not stain or leave an odour in the boards.

Our cutting boards are handcrafted and come in a variety of styles and sizes. You might like to read our “Australian Handmade Quality Guarantee”.
